Summer Palace Tours Compared

You can see the Summer Palace on your own with an audio guide, hire a guide at the gate or book a private or combination tour. Here is how the options differ.

How Summer Palace tours differ

The park is large and mostly outdoors, so the first question is how much guidance you want. Some visitors walk the lake shore on their own and rent an audio guide. Others hire a guide at a gate for the history of the halls. A third group books a private or combination tour that handles the transport and the tickets.

The park offers audio guides in 19 languages, a smartphone guide and personal guides. Booked tours add transport, a fixed plan and often several sights in one day. Prices change, so the tour cards below show live prices in USD.

Choosing between self-guided and guided

Three questions that settle it.

How much time do you have?

With half a day, a self-guided walk along the lake and the Long Corridor works well. With a single day for all of Beijing, a combination tour covers more ground with less planning.

The Long Corridor โ†’

Do you want the inner areas?

The tower, the Garden of Virtue and Harmony, Suzhou Street and the museum need the through ticket or extra tickets. A booked tour may include only the park entry, so check what the ticket covers.

Ticket guide โ†’

Do you want the lake?

Boats are not part of the entry ticket. A tour may include a boat ride or leave it out, so look at the list of inclusions before you book.

Three sample plans

Ways to combine the options.

Half a day on your own

Buy a park ticket, rent an audio guide and walk the lake shore, the Long Corridor and the hill. Add a ferry if your legs need a break.

A guide for the halls

Hire a guide at one of the gate counters for the history of the buildings, then continue on your own to the lake.

A full day booked ahead

Choose a private or combination tour when your time in Beijing is short. Check the meeting point, the language and what the ticket covers.

Whatever you choose, the lake and the tower are the parts that reward time. Leave room for them in the plan.

What to check before you book

The wording differs more than the prices do.

Meeting point

The park has several gates, and they are not interchangeable. Make sure the meeting point matches the gate you can reach by metro.

Getting there โ†’

What the entry covers

The park ticket and the through ticket are different products. Ask whether the tour includes the park entry only or the paid inner areas as well.

Language

Check the guide's language when you book. English is available, and German is not something to assume.

Food, boats and tips

These are usually separate. Look at what is listed as included and what is not.

Cancellation

Terms differ by offer and cannot be carried over. Read them before you pay.

Plan the rest of your visit

Where the tour fits.

If you plan a day trip with the imperial city, see the guide to Forbidden City tours. For a day on the Great Wall, there is a separate guide to tours at Mutianyu.

Summer Palace tours: frequently asked questions

Do I need a guide at the Summer Palace?

No. You can walk the park alone and rent an audio guide in one of 19 languages. A guide helps most with the history of the halls and the paintings.

Where do I find a guide at the park?

There are guide counters at the East Palace Gate, the North Palace Gate and the New Palace Gate.

Is there a German-language guide?

Personal guides are offered in Chinese, English and Russian. For German, book a tour ahead and ask for the language when you reserve.

Does a tour include the boat?

Not always. Boats are sold separately at the park, so check the list of inclusions of each tour. See the Kunming Lake page for boat prices.

Can I combine the Summer Palace with other sights in one day?

Yes, combination day trips exist. The Old Summer Palace is the natural neighbor, and longer trips add the sights in the city center.
